In celebration of America's historic presidential election, Juba Books is proud to release a play script for young people about President-elect Barack Obama's younger life up to his election victory. The script, entitled "I Have A Promise," is included in the new book, "Positive African American Plays for Children, Book 3" with others about Condoleezza Rice, Cullen Jones, Missy Elliot, and Reginald Lewis.
Juba Books, a new imprint by NetNia Publishing, concentrates specifically on publishing books of play scripts geared to the African American market but suitable for performance by all cultures.
With the success of NetNia Publishing's first two books of plays, owner Jeffery Bradley created the Juba Books imprint to continue the legacy of the Positive African American Plays for Children book series. Juba Books will focus on cultural play scripts with historical and modern history themes. The company is releasing the first three titles in 2009.
"We pride ourselves on having worked hard to fill the void in Black-oriented children play scripts," says Jeffery Bradley. "A good play can fire up a child's imagination," he says, "and change his or her attitude, or spark an interest and motivation that did not exist before. We hope the scripts, about Barack Obama and others in the new book, motivate children to excellence and inspire us all to achieve greatness."
The word Juba is a variation of a West African day name. It's also the name of a dance slaves performed during their gatherings where drumming or music instruments were not allowed.
During the dance, slaves told stories through hand-clapping, foot stepping, and acting out characters. The name Juba serves as a perfect reflection of the new imprint invoking what Bradley calls "a celebration of creativity whenever children of all cultures gather and perform the plays."
Juba Books can help anyone motivate children to excellence through plays. For more information about the "Positive African American Plays for Children" series of books, visit http://www.africanamericanchildrenplays.com
