The foundation's main source of revenue is generated once a year in January at a breakfast commemorating the accomplishments of the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. For the past nineteen years, the breakfast has been and will always be held on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
At the breakfast each year the Foundation announces the names of recipients of the "Reverend John Jackson Award" and the "Drum Major Award". The "Reverend John Jackson Award" is given to honor an individual's achievements in economic development. The "Drum Major Award" is given to a person who has demonstrated a significant contribution furthering ethnic and cultural diversity and tolerance within their community. Along with these prestigious awards, each recipient receives $500 to assist them in their work. The recipients of these awards are selected from nominations throughout the Pacific N.W.
The current year scholarship recipients are also announced at the Breakfast. These graduating high school senior and college students are selected from a long list of worthy applicants. The winners are chosen on their financial, educational and community involvement. To further assist student educational goals, the Skanner Foundation has pledged five $1,000.00 scholarships at the University of Portland.
Throughout the year, the Foundation distributes thousands of dollars in awards, grants, and gifts to community organizations striving to promote both individual and community educational growth.
The Skanner Foundation needs help to accomplish its mission. Our greatest challenge is to generate a solid base of support from organizations and individuals that share our ambition to create a better future for intercity communities.
