De Bardelaben Becomes First Black Woman to Lead Educators' Society

Marian de Bardelaben is the first African American state president of the Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international honorary society for women educators.
For de Bardelaben, this work continues her 32 years of service as an educator, two terms on the Public Health Advisory Board and membership in the International Sorority of Delta Sigma Theta Inc.
She holds an administrative certification in education and has taught kindergarten through eighth grade, specializing in middle-school behavior management. She serves schools in North and Northeast Portland as a substitute teacher.
Alpha Delta Kappa International's state altruistic project is to support the Lance Armstrong Grant given to the Cancer Care Resources, a nonprofit service for cancer survivors. The Alpha Delta Kappa focus will be to provide coping skills materials to children of cancer patients throughout the state.
As part of her duties as state president, de Bardelaben recently traveled to Fairbanks, Alaska, to represent Oregon at Alpha Delta Kappa's Northwest regional conference. The organization is dedicated to educational excellence, altruism and world understanding.
