The Chief's Forum, a policy advisory group for Portland's chief of police, is seeking nominations of neighbors and officers who helped their communities become safer places to live and work.
The annual awards and recognition ceremony will take place Monday, Dec. 11, in the auditorium of the Portland Building. Deadline for all nominations is Nov. 13.
"There are many groups and individuals out there who go above and beyond in making their neighborhoods safe for residents and children," said Chief Rosanne M. Sizer. "Yet, because of their good nature and devotion to serve, these people don't know how many lives they impact.
"This event is held to honor their community policing efforts and to thank them for the countless volunteer hours they put in to improve our neighborhoods."
There are four Chief's Forum Award categories, and the activities of the nominees should have occurred in 2005. The award categories are:
• Youth Recognition Award: Awarded to any youth (high school or under 18 years) who, through school or community activities, promotes the community policing effort in a distinctive way.
• Certificate of Appreciation: Awarded to any individual or group who aids the community in promoting community policing efforts in a distinctive way.
• Community Policing Problem Solving Award: Recognizes any individual or group for demonstrating creative problem-solving methods and/or techniques used to improve their community.
• Nathan Thomas Award: The Chief's Forum Award's highest honor is given to any individual who demonstrated in great degree exceptional communicative accomplishments that further the goals of community policing and/or shows acts of selflessness, personal courage and devotion to community.
