Voters were in a generous mood Tuesday when they approved ballot measures for the Portland Public Schools and for preserving natural spaces in the metropolitan area.
But their message was mixed in other ballot measures. They split on two campaign finance measures, for instance, when they defeated a constitutional amendment to limit campaign financing but approved its sister measure that put new financing requirements into place. Although they approved some property tax measures, they turned down an opportunity to use a federal income tax credit.
Oregon's congressional delegation will stay the same, with the incumbent U.S. Representatives retained. Gov. Ted Kulongoski defeated long-time rival Ron Saxton and won a second term in office. Former reporter and Portland Public Schools spokesman Lew Frederick lost out to local businessman Jeffrey Cogan.
