The second season of the Interstate Farmers Market will begin Wednesday, May 10, and run each Wednesday through September. The market will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. on North Interstate Avenue across from the Kaiser Permanente Interstate Campus.
The market is only a few steps from the MAX Yellow Line's Overlook Park Station. Free parking is available for cars and bicycles.
Although this is only the market's second season, it has already developed a reputation for supplying a variety of fresh, local produce, baked goods, cut flowers, artisan cheese, meat and fish. This season, market organizers hope to expand the number of vendors and the number of shoppers.
"The Interstate Farmers Market enables our farmers and vendors to achieve the full retail price for their products," said Kevin McGovney, market manager. "They give consumers the chance to meet the people who grow the food and to get the freshest foods money can buy. Everyone wins."
The Interstate Farmers Market, coordinated by Kaiser Permanente and a group of active community members from North Portland, aims to provide locally grown food to the North Portland community while helping area farmers develop a marketing outlet for their products.
"I am so excited about how the market is shaping up this season. We have learned from last year and plan to make this season's market even more successful,"said Alex Lowenthal, manager for the Kaiser Permanente Interstate campus. "This market serves the staff of our campus and Kaiser Permanente members visiting the medical center. It also provides access for the wider neighborhood to enjoy and shop at the only farmers market in North Portland."
